 FAQs

  • Visitors are often surprised they find a space like Inicio Coffee in Pacoima, CA. When we found the property, we realized there was a strong desire in the community for specialty coffee and a cozy place to work, but there wasn’t much here then. We also know that the San Fernando Valley is known for its trafficking scene, and we wanted to take a stand against that and educate every customer about the realities of injustice that still happen in our community. Since opening in Pacoima, we’ve been proud to be one of the few coffee shops that not only serve freshly roasted coffee and provide a clean, inviting space to work, but also create opportunities to end injustice and inspire change—starting right here in our region.

  • Yes, we have free Wifi available for customers. Inicio Coffee is the perfect place to study or work on your laptop. We have plenty of seating, fast Wifi, and exceptional coffee to keep you alert.

  • Inicio comes from the Latin, meaning “inspire” or “at the beginning” and translates to “start” in Spanish. Both of these phrases represent new beginnings, which is exactly what we want to offer trafficking survivors. By supporting anti-trafficking organizations and joining the initiative to end injustice, we’re helping survivors start fresh and build their lives from a place of hope. We also want to remind our customers that it’s never too late to begin again. Whether you’ve been dreaming of doing something or are starting over after a hard time, we believe the best is ahead—and we’ll provide the coffee to help power that fresh start.

  • When you’re in the shop, you may see stickers or merch with the phrase “Because They Matter” on them, and we get several questions about who or what that is. It originates from the non-profit we partner with, Justice 180. They coined the term “Because They Matter” to express that everything we do is rooted in the belief that survivors of trafficking, and their stories, matter deeply to us. At Inicio, we support anti-trafficking initiatives (like Justice 180) because we care about survivors’ stories, their dreams, and the restoration of their lives. Every cup of coffee and fresh pastry sold is one step closer to a freer world—and we stand against injustice because survivors of human trafficking matter to us. If you’re in the shop, get your own “Because They Matter” sticker, shirt, or tote to show your support for survivors and take a stand to end injustice.

  • Although the vision for Inicio started years before it opened, our shop officially opened its doors to the community of San Fernando Valley on January 8th, 2021, under the name TK Coffee, which changed to Inicio Coffee Company in 2023. We leased the space amid a worldwide pandemic, dreaming of providing specialty coffee to locals and supporting a greater cause.
